FAQs

The MOSAIC study is developing new ways of predicting and diagnosing heart conditions.

FAQs

Who can see my data?

Only approved researchers who meet strict requirements can access your information for research. Your name or personal details are never shared.

Will my data be sold?

No. Your data will never be sold or shared with third parties for profit.

How is my privacy protected?

Your information is de-identified, stored securely, and used only for approved health research. Oversight by ethics boards, patient partners, and Indigenous advisors helps ensure data is handled responsibly.

Will I get results back?

Yes – if you choose. Participants can opt in to receive:

  • A report of their clinical blood work.
  • Notification of any important genetic findings discovered by chance. These results will be sent directly to your doctor, who will review them with you and discuss any next steps for your care.

What if I don’t want results?

That’s completely fine. Receiving results is your choice. If you prefer not to get reports, your samples and data will still contribute to the study and help improve heart health for future patients and communities.

Can I withdraw if I change my mind?

Participation is completely voluntary, and you can choose to withdraw at any time up until your data has been sent to the Pan Canadian Genome Library and anonymized. Once your data is anonymized, it cannot be linked back to you, so withdrawal is no longer possible.

Withdrawing will not affect your medical care in any way, and any information not yet shared with the research library will be securely removed from the study.

Where and when can I get my blood work done?

Currently, you can have your blood work completed at:
Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) Lab: Monday-Thursday 8 AM-3 PM
St. Paul’s Hospital (SPH) Lab: Monday-Friday 9 AM-3 PM
When you complete the consent form to join the study, you’ll be asked to select your preferred lab. A requisition for the lab you choose will be emailed to you directly. Please note that this requisition is only valid for the lab selected on your consent form. If you later decide to visit a different lab, please contact the study team by email or phone so we can issue an updated requisition for your new lab choice.
Your blood draw must be completed within 90 days of your echocardiography visit, either before or after your echocardiogram.

VGH and SPH Hospital Labs accept walk‑ins, but you can also book an appointment at either lab using this link: https://www.labonlinebooking.ca/login

If you prefer, our team can book an appointment for you – just email us or arrange a call, and we’ll be happy to help!

Do I need to fast for my MOSAIC blood draw?

Fasting is NOT required for the MOSAIC blood draw. If you are having other blood tests done at the same time, please confirm whether those tests require fasting, as their requirements may differ. Any fasting needed for other tests will not affect your MOSAIC results.

Is the MOSAIC blood draw different from a regular blood draw?

No. The MOSAIC blood draw is the same as a standard blood draw, using the same needles, procedures, and collection process you would experience for routine blood tests.

When do I need to have my blood drawn for MOSAIC?

Your MOSAIC blood draw should be completed within 90 days of your echocardiography visit. This can be done either before or after your echocardiogram, as long as it falls within that 90‑day window.
